New York requires a Boater Education Card for boaters, and not a boating license. The regulatory authority for the card is New York State Parks.

Persons above the age of 14 are allowed to operate a personal watercraft if they possess the above mentioned certificate. Until the year 2009, boaters of the age 10-13 are allowed to operate personal watercrafts with some restrictions. Persons between 10-18 years of age are allowed to operate motorboats if they possess the safety certificate. Persons under the age of 10 are allowed to operate motorboats (excluding personal watercrafts) if they are under the supervision of someone above the age of 18 or someone between the age of 10-18 who has completed the Boaters Safety Education course and holds a certificate.

Our icebreaker Polar Star somewhere on the Antarctic Peninsula. We ended up on this vessel after our original ship, Ocean Nova, got into an accident on the Antarctica. Also, we got a brand new captain, as the previous one hurt himself badly in a storm when crossing Drake’s Passage. March 2009.

I would appreciate suggestions and ideas on how to locate people who would be interested in such a trip, are knowledgeable in all aspects of blue water cruising, plus possess the right character traits (honest, flexible, adventurous, responsible, easy-going, etc.).

Also, I would appreciate any comments regarding specific experience, knowledge or traits I should be looking for in a cruising partner. For example, I am sure that speaking spanish would be a desireable asset.

I suggest that you contact associations of people who like to sail. If he was not so old (he’s in his 70′s) my uncle would probably love to go along. He’s an avid sailer and ocne sailed in a race from SF to HAwaii and came in second place.

I have used vacationstogo with great success. But just so you know going directly to a regular travel agent may get you even a better price or more perks. Plus a regular travel agent will not charge you anything, may have pictures of cabins, and give very good advice. I have booked through vacationstogo, directly with the cruise company, and with a regular travel agent. I prefer a regular travel agent now because it seems more personal.
